Well last year we paid a fee and it included all the labor. (scorers and loaders) This year we get charged the same price and all the scorers are removed as the teams now must score their own. Then they took that price and added the target increase. So in effect we had a double increase.

What a nice celebration of the life of WTA Hall of Famer and current SE Director, Dick Otto. It was so nice to see all the people(some who traveled a great distance) who came out on a cold snowy Saturday to pay their respects to Arlene and the entire Otto family.
I wish I could have stayed longer but it was so nice catching up with old friends, the many memories of Dick shared, it almost had the feeling of being at a family reunion. I’ve always known the best part of our sport was the people but this just reaffirmed it.
One thing I’ve always like about attending the visitation is the pictures and albums. Nice to see all the pictures of Dick but nice to see more of the history of our sport. The old articles in the newspaper when they actually put articles in the paper and the All-state team were sponsored by the paper. Nice to see all the articles about the great athlete Dick was on the basketball court in his early years.
I know Dick is in a better place, shooting with his friends in heaven, smiling down on us all.
This problem stems all the way back to when I served on the board. I see shooting doing very well. The SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program) is very strong in the number of young people that are participating in the various clay target disciplines (trap, skeet, and sporting clays). Currently our state is number 2 in number of participants just behind Iowa. But overall registered shooting is not as strong, although there are a couple clubs that still do very well. And getting directors is a problem.
For whatever reason people are not willing to donate their time to their sport (or cause)and you don’t just see this in shooting. We have the same problem in our schools. I don’t fault anyone, but nowadays free time is precious and people just want to go a shoot, socialize with friends, etc. but not work. They would rather pay more and have people hired to do the work.
This site and others like it also indirectly contribute to the problem. If our directors are constantly getting badgered and yelled at, eventually they say enough is enough. I’ve been guilty of it as have many others. Plus on a site like this, it is very easy to read tone into a response or a question and that can cause misunderstanding. We all must remember that our directors are volunteering their time and in some cases it costs them money to serve.
How is the problem solved. I have no idea. But start by everytime you go to a shoot, seek out those running it and thank them for their time. Thank the trap kids for their efforts. Ask if you can help out. It’s the little things that count. I have done this alot over the last several years and it is amazing how it changes a attitude, both those running the shoot and yours.

Such hostility for a group that had a great event at the homegrounds with lots of positives.
If your not happy with the agreement that the WTA board agreed to with the WI SCTP group, maybe you should talk to your director or President Thistle.
I hope you get a little more happy by next week so you can enjoy the state shoot and the homegrounds

The WTA board sets the price for this shoot. And as Tate mentioned do make a profit.
I have no knowledge on the three camping spots or on what the contract states for when payment is due.
If you didn’t have these shoots at the Homegrounds, would you have a Homegrounds. The facility can’t support itself on a one week a year event. Where would you hold the state shoot without the Homegrounds facility? Iowa ? Michagan ? Where as there is no facility in WI to hold such events if we don’t have the homegrounds.
And as President Thistle mentioned to me last week, the facility does not belong to the WTA, it belongs to the shooters. It is THEIR “Homegrounds”.
Don, the difference in costs per hundred from the SCTP fee and your state shoot entry fee is $5 and as Tate mentioned the SCTP does all the registration, collects score sheets, purchases trophies etc. Not to mention, the WTA has the perfect training day to make sure the kids are all trained and ready to go for the state shoot. I would have loved to have an event like this before the state shoot to train the kids. That in of itself is worth something to the WTA that is not monetary but priceless.
Dick – First, Thank you to both you and Arlene for all your efforts and serving the shooters of WI.
Everyone should be positive about the “Homegrounds”. It’s becoming a very nice facility and that building will change the perception of the facility. You don’t have to go to the Homegrounds, you don’t have to agree with the decisions or the people who made them that have gotten the facility to this point. But it’s pretty cool to be building a gun club in the state. Doesn’t happen very often. Way easier to lose a gun club than to get a new one. And we have a very nice one with what is starting to look like has a nice future.
Sad but true … but some things never change. It was the same scenario during my 10 years on the board. All those that Amy listed including herself deserve a huge thank you from the membership. Eventually, new people will have to get involved if you wish to maintain and grow the facility. The facility is stating to get some traction, now is not the time to take a step backwards. I myself am looking forward to seeing the new building in a couple weeks when I’m up at the Homegrounds for the SCTP Youth State Championship.
I still have all the comments sheets from when the WTA was pursuing the Homegrounds project and where it would be built/located. Overwhelmingly, if you build it we will come, we will donate, we will get involved, and overwhelmingly, Rome was the preferred location. If that was the case, why so much difficulty getting help from the membership ? Has to change at some point if you wish to maintain and continue building the facility.
Question : If there was a 15% increase in costs from White Flyer, how can prices remain the same? If the Homegrounds is a business, how can you eat the cost and not have a price increase. You are trying to grow the business, make improvements to the facility, pay the bills, etc. how can you not increase the cost for targets when they have increased? It’s the one thing the Homegrounds sells and it provides the funds to do the things listed like pay the bills. I think most people understand our sport is expensive and understand a .25 or .50 cent increase per round when costs increase.
I also hope that when the price includes labor for the youth shoots, (yes I understand there is a cost for it) I hope they are trained and not being trained during the event. If they are trained and good to go, cost is acceptable. If the event is being used as a training day then cost should be adjusted and discounted as your then not paying for trained help.
Question : How did the taxes not get paid on the Camping grounds and how does that get paid? Does the money to pay for that come from money made from camping or shooting? How much was the penalty for not making the payments? Is there a plan to get that situation resolved so the facility can continue to move forward?
Dan How can the current board be at fault for upsetting people as the current board was elected at the December 2016 elections. Shouldn’t we be looking at the old board ???
From the minutes — “Arlene has gone through every piece of paperwork due to being audited. She has sent the reports to the accountant who has questioned many items because they don’t know what they are for. Many of the checks were made out to the previous treasurer without an explanation on what the payments were for and no receipts were received. Arlene reached out to the previous treasurer twice and no response was received”
Can this be better explained and does this concern anyone ???
