I made a mistake in Denny’s obituary. He was the first Wisconsin resident in 56 years to win the Grand American Handicap.
I wanted to share the obituary for Denny that will be printed in the local Muscoda paper. There will be more information about Denny’s trapshooting career in an upcoming Trap & Field edition under the Completed Careers section.
I have know Denny ever since I was very young because he was at my parents house frequently when I was growing up. Denny and I my Dad (Virgil) were the most influential people that I knew in the trapshooting world and they are the reason I am still active in the sport and love it even today.

I will miss Denny very much!!

Dennis Taylor, 68, of Walworth, WI, formerly of Blue River, WI and Muscoda, WI passed away March 31, 2019 in Wauwatosa, WI with his family. Born October 3, 1950 in Blue River, WI to Gale and Trudy Taylor. After graduating from Riverdale High School in 1968, Denny attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Upon graduation from UW-Platteville, Denny worked several years for Wick Homes and traveled all over the country building new homes. In 1983, Denny married the love of his life, Ruth, and they moved to Walworth, WI where he had his own carpentry business.
When Denny was growing up, the Taylor family owned a turkey farm just outside of Muscoda and they were also very heaving involved with horse showing but Denny’s real passion was trapshooting.
Denny started trapshooting in 1970 at the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club. While attending UW-Platteville in 1972, he won Class A at the ACUI National Collegiate Trapshooting Championships and was asked to participate in the Olympic Trapshooting tryouts later that summer. During the next year in 1973, Denny made his first trip to the Grand American (Vandalia, OH) with Virgil Bomkamp and Norbert Hipenbecker, all from Muscoda, and subsequently won the Grand American Handicap World Championship with a score of 99×100. Denny was the first person from Wisconsin to win the GAH Championship in 46 years.
Over the course of his long shooting career, Denny was also very active member of the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club serving as its President from 1975 to 1985. Denny was also very passionate about the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association and served on its Board of Directors, off and on, for over 5 decades. Denny was very instrumental in helping to make the new WTA home grounds in Rome, WI a reality. Denny was inducted into the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association’s Hall of Fame in 2013.
In addition to being a great shooter and ambassador for the sport of trapshooting, Denny also liked to hunt, watch the Packers/Brewers and travel with his wife Ruth. Denny’s enthusiasm, laughter and love of life was contagious for all around him.
Denny was preceded in death by his father Gale, and is survived by his wife Ruth, mother Trudy of Muscoda, brother Jerry (Laurene) of Mukwonago, brother Jack (Kay) of Lone Rock, and nephews & nieces as well as many friends.
Per Denny’s wishes, there will be no service held but rather a celebration of life at the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club on Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Condolences or donations may be made to the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club or the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association.

As far as I know, it is business as usual at Darien. They are shooting a full 10 week Fall League and they have ATA shoots scheduled thru October 2018.
Some inventory was not liquidated, so they still have mostly trapshooting reloading components and shells available as well as some limited shotguns & accessories for sale.
I have had a couple of inquiries about whether the Team Shoot is still on for this coming Sunday because of the rain and flooding.
The Muscoda area has not been affected by the flooding so the shoot IS STILL ON!
Some of the towns that are in route have been affected. Specifically, those where HWY 14 goes thru them east and northwest of Muscoda.
HWY 14 in Black Earth is closed for an undetermined time (bridge out) and HWY 14 in Readstown was flooded at last report, so if you were planning to come these 2 ways please choose an alternate route or see some of directions below.
The address for the club is as follows:
18849 Sportsmans Drive
Muscoda, WI 53573Directions to Muscoda if coming from the east or south of Madison
On the south side of Madison take the “Beltline” exit which is HWY 12/14/18/151 going West
Exit off the Beltline at HWY 18/151 going West to Dodgeville.
When you get close to Dodgeville, take the HWY 18 West exit right into town.
Continue West on HWY 18 until you arrive in Cobb and take HWY 80 North.
Continue North on HWY 80 until you arrive at intersection of HWY 133, take it West.
HWY 80/133 are now combined and will take you right into Muscoda
(Your GPS may give some additional short cuts)Directions to Muscoda if coming from the north of Madison
On the north side of Madison take HWY 19 West to Waunakee
Continue to follow HWY 19 West (you will merge with HWY 12 for a little bit) until you arrive at intersection of HWY 78 South/West
Continue West/South on HWY 78 until you arrive at intersection of HWY 14 West just outside of Mazomanie.
Continue West on HWY 14 until you arrive in Gotham and take HWY 60 West
Continue West on HWY 60 until you arrive at the Muscoda bridge intersection (4 way stop) and take HWY 80 South right into town
(Your GPS may give some additional short cuts)Directions to Muscoda if coming from the Southwest
Your normal route should be fine, we are not aware of any major HWYs affected by the rain/flooding.Directions to Muscoda if coming from the Northwest
HWY 14 in Readstown may be closed so please check first and map an alternate route if needed (too many alternatives to list)-

Could someone please post the results from this shoot?
Thanks,
Brad
Thanks to everyone for their help for this shoot.
The WA state shoot was a once lifetime opportunity that we couldn’t pass up! We really had a good time, even if it was for only 2 days.
Thanks again,
Brad
As Mike states, the Muscoda Sportsmans Club will be hosting it’s 2nd ATA Registered shoot of the year.
Please come out and have some fun while enjoying the nicer temperatures, fluorescent green targets and food (we still have home made donuts, deep fried cheese curd and deep fried dill pickles along with the regular menu).
We had a terrific turnout for the 1st ATA shoot (95 shooters) and we hope everybody can make it back!!
Registration begins at 9:00 AM and the 16 yard event will follow starting at 10:30 AM.
Any questions please contact Virgil Bomkamp @ 608-475-0295.
Hope to see you there!!

As of this morning, the webpages are still not refreshing automatically for me.
Brad
The Muscoda Sportsmans Club would like to Thank all those participated and attended the shoot. We ended with 89 teams, an amazing turnout!!
We also wanted to Thank all the people who help prepare for the shoot, those who helped the day of the shoot, and finally those who helped clean up the next day.
Without all those volunteers, the success of the shoot would not be possible. Thank You very much!!
Hope to see everyone again next year!!
In order for this shoot to grow, there has to be something to shoot for. All the money that was paid out was from the shooters playing the options. There were no team trophies or added money.
I understand the financial situation the WTA is in, but if you want competitive shooters to come from short/long distances to shoot, some type of recognition should be given for at least a couple of teams.
If the shoot is going to be designated as a donation shoot to benefit the homegrounds, then it should be advertised as such.
The $1000 donated money for the random number drawing was great and very much appreciated, but it was just that..random.
Just a quick update, it appears there are 83 teams presquaded for the Team Shoot (if unsure how to check, click Mike’s MSC team shoot link above and then click on “squad number and times”). If you are still interested in getting a starting shoot time reserved please contact Virgil Bomkamp @ 608-475-0295 ASAP.
Looks like we have a lot of new teams this year as well as the teams we see year after year. Should be a great shoot and we look forward to seeing everyone again this year! Thanks for your support!!
-Brad
Very nice pictures Amy, thanks for sharing.
As Mike indicated yesterday’s shoot was very well attended. We really didn’t know what to expect with other shoots going on and the hot weather but it ended up being our largest shoot of the year with some very good scores.
We want to Thank all the regular/local shooters who attend all or most of the ATA shooters but also the shooters from neighboring states. Participating in yesterday’s shooter were residents from 4 States (WI, IA, IL, and MN). Some traveled from as far away are 190 miles!!
Looking forward to seeing everyone again on Labor Day weekend for the Team Shoot!!
Update: The weather is supposed to be absolutely beautiful!!!
81 degrees
Sunny skies
0% chance of rain
9 mph breeze
Please come and join us!!
As Mike mentioned, this Sunday, May 22nd, the Muscoda Sportsman’s Club will be hosting our 3rd ATA Registered shoot.
Please come out and have some fun while enjoying the great temperatures, targets and food.
We will have hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and onion rings. As always we will be featuring fresh home made donuts, and deep fried cheese curds and deep fried dill pickles.
Everyone is welcome to stop down to shoot, eat or just visit.
Any questions please contact Virgil Bomkamp @ 608-475-0295.
Hope to see you there!!
